Persona 5 Research

(Persona 5, 2016) Is a playstation 3 and 4 game released in 2016 by Atlus. The reason why I'm choosing to look at this game is because of the influence it will have on our project. There will be three areas I will look at; Colour schemes, Locations and themes of the game.

The only real difference to this game is the PEGI rating and audience. The PEGI rating is 16 and from playing the game I would imagine the rating is around 16-18 for target audience. There is some violence and strong language in it, which boosts it to a 16.

Locations

The game is set in Japan for the most part. It has real locations such as Harajuku and Shibuya. For our game the setting is very similar. A scene of skyscrapers with huge buildings towering over narrow streets. Much like in Japan there are loads of flats and apartments above shops/ restaurants. Which is what the asset artists have recreated for our level.

When you play the game it really hits you how closely related to Japan it is, its nearly perfect and that's definitely contributed to the success of the game. Having Japanese culture in the game is a big attraction point from some peoples perspective - bringing in people who will play it for nostalgia over the identical cities.

Colour schemes

Throughout the almost entirety of the game the colour palette is full of colour and brightness. The cities themselves a quite dark. Buildings and paths are grey however they are illuminated with thousands of lights, whether they are signs, lights, lampposts or billboards.

Our game has the exact same colour scheme. Muted cities and grounds but then lights engulfing the city. It also makes sense for this to link to our target audience. Our PEGI rating is 7 so anything too dark could be classed as scary. So lights brighten up the scene and attract the children to the game.

THemes of the game

One of the main themes of the game and the one I will be looking at is Cyberpunk. It has the main codes and conventions of a cyberpunk game. These include:

  • Cityscapes

  • Neon Lights

  • Adult themes - Gambling and alcohol etc.

  • Sometimes Japanese Culture

This is almost identical to what we are having in our game however we aren't showing the full adult themes. We are parodying them - So in the casinos there are games and in the bar they are drinking juice and soda.

This way we can keep to the similar themes of Persona 5 and cyberpunk but appeal to our target audience.
